Ocean Purpose Project - NCP Design Trip
Project Type:
Service Design
Date:
September 2024
Location:
Singapore / Perth
I was lucky enough to be selected by the New Colombo Plan for a design trip to Singapore in 2024. There, we met with our client, the Ocean Purpose Project, an ocean conservation organisation aiming to address the plastic pollution crisis, and conducted interviews with residents in Singapore to identify an issue we could help solve. Once back in Perth, we developed a touchpoint strategy proposal to help promote the non-profit organisation in Singapore and the world.
We visited OPP's beach hub in Singapore to thoroughly understand their work. Meeting with the client and discussing what their perceived issues are, and how we might begin to address them.
With the knowledge given to us after our site visit, we set off into the local gathering places in Singapore to gather additional data. Conducting ethnographic interviews in small teams, we investigated how Singaporeans felt about recycling and their impact on the environment.
What we found was that Singaporeans do care about recycling and the environment, but they lack proper information on how to live greener lives properly. Additionally, not many people in Singapore had heard of OPP. From here, we came back to Perth and started work on a comprehensive awareness campaign for the Ocean Purpose Project.
One part of the awareness campaign was adding more to their school excursions program. We proposed adding more elements before and after the excursion, with the worksheets I created being examples of pre and post-excursion activities. Meant to reinforce the lessons learned while they're out and about.
We also noticed a lack of merchandise for the Ocean Purpose Project, which was something we proposed to rectify. We created merch that volunteers would use everyday as well as other items that would be available for purchase by the public. Which offered another revenue stream and would boost awareness of their brand itself.
Finally, we proposed a new website concept that aimed to improve the Information Architecture of the website, as other users would often find it confusing. We offered concepts for a redesigned homepage and e-brochure that aim to provide more clarity on OPP's purpose and the work they do. Important for bringing in more supporters of their work.
